From swifts to chairs to husbands…how do you keep your skein of yarn tangle-free while hand-winding?

Reply here with your tips for tangle-free yarn.

If I don’t have access to the swift and ball-winder (are those the right terms?), I sit with my knees up…feet tucked towards my butt…put the skein around my knees that are spread out enough to make it taught and not fall off, then start winding it in a ball. (A visual might be fun to add…but I don’t have one, because I probably look ridiculous. Hahaha!) Most crazy place I’ve done this? Airplane. (I’m a world traveler…and sometimes I just can’t wait on those really long flights.)

More often than not I self wind by laying the skein around my neck, like a necklace and then wind around my head. I get to feel what the yarn is like on my  neck before I make anything out of it.

That’s a good idea, Gail! I bet it makes for a nice arm workout, too.
